Our trip to Washington, DC included a visit to Hillwood Estate and it was extraordinary! This oasis in the nation’s capital was the home of Marjorie Merriweather Post,( 1887 – 1973) the heiress to the Postum Cereal Company, later General Foods, and at the time, the wealthiest woman in America. In 1955, Marjorie Post purchased Hillwood Estate as her spring and autumn residence and spent two years renovating it. She was a serious collector of French decorative and fine art of the 1700’s and Imperial Russia in the 1800’s and 1900’s and they are on display in the home, which now serves as a museum.
