Do you recognize this historic house and know who the famous person was who resided there? If you answered Mount Vernon and U.S. President George Washington, you’re correct! Some family members and I toured the estate on September 13th and it was so interesting! Situated along the Potomac River in Fairfax County, Virginia, the house was originally built as a modest one and a half story in 1734 by George’s father, Augustine. It underwent multiple expansions and renovations by George in 1750 and again in 1770 to become the grand Georgian-style mansion we see today. Thanks to the Mount Vernon Ladies Association working to restore and preserve the estate through the years, it is one of the most popular historic sites in America, open 365 days a year.
